When the mobilisation order was issued on 2 August 1914, I was 19 years old and a senior high school student in Hanover. I volunteered for the war. Due to poor organisation, I was only able to join the Fusilier Regiment "Prince Albrecht of Prussia" (Hanover No. 73) after several weeks of waiting in front of the barracks and in orderly offices. Since it was not possible to enlist until October, due to the overcrowding of volunteers at military schools, I used this time to take my graduation exams.
