When the mobilisation order was issued on 2 August 1914, I was 19 years old and a senior high school student in Hanover. I volunteered for the war. Due to poor organisation, I was only able to join the Fusilier Regiment "Prince Albrecht of Prussia" (Hanover No. 73) after several weeks of waiting in front of the barracks and in orderly offices.
