Interview Question on Progress - Ernst Jünger
But what is your idea of progress?
To me, this is an anthropomorphism by which modern man tries to read history. It is a substitute for the idea of the 'spirit of the world'. We have to distance ourselves from it and look at the universe and its history in terms of the principle of conservation of energy. The force of the cosmos always remains the same; there is no progress, no retreat, no acceleration or deceleration to change it. Only the figures change, the shapes that history, and indeed the earth too, constantly raises from its depths. The problem I see here is a different one: can we make man, this supreme revelation in the history of the universe, responsible for its evolution?
